  • FHLL Baseball News & Updates

Greetings FHLL Families!

We are inviting you to an informational call the league will be hosting on Thursday, April 25th at 8:00 pm. The purpose of the call is to go over details and answer any questions regarding 3 tournaments we have coming up: All League, The Fun Tournament and All Stars. Below is a description of each to provide some context which we will discuss further in depth during the call. Zoom details are at the bottom of this note.

All League:

Each year Fort Hunt Little League asks players and coaches to select the players that best represent FHLL in the AAA, Minors and Majors Divisions. The league considers players based on skill development, teamwork, good sportsmanship and having a great attitude and love for baseball and FHLL. Each year we are pleased to showcase the All League Players in a Division Game on one day - this year, that day is Saturday May 18th.

The Fun Tournament:

Each year Virginia District 9 Little League conducts a "Fun Tournament" between the end of the regular season and the start of All-Star play. The Fun Tournament was created to offer post-season play for players in the "kid pitch" divisions - AAA, Minors and Majors. This tournament provides an opportunity for players to enjoy more baseball and test themselves against other Little Leaguers in District 9 in tournament play.

FHLL players baseball age 8 through 12 and registered for the Spring 2024 season and not involved in All-Star play are eligible to play in the Fun Tournament. Participation is included in the regular season registration so there is no additional charge.

The tournament is divided into two divisions: 12U (ages 10, 11, 12) and 10U (ages 8, 9, 10). Fun Tournament games start around June 12th and continue for approximately two weeks in a double elimination format. Games are held on weeknights and weekends. Games will be played at a variety of Little League fields in District 9.

All Stars:

Any player that is Little League Age 8-16 and a registered player is eligible to be considered for play in the District 9 All Stars tournament. FHLL is looking for a group of players that will best represent FHLL in competition and character. The FHLL All-Star selection process is conducted by the FHLL Player Agents and in accordance with Little League International rules and Fort Hunt Little League House Rules. To be considered eligible for a FHLL All-Star team, the player:

Must reside or attend school within the FHLL’s boundaries; or Received a waiver from Little League International approving post season play with FHLL; and Played in a minimum of eight (8) regular season FHLL games. The first step in the selection process is the voting by players, and coaches (1 head coach and 2 rostered and identified assistant coaches from each team) for all-stars among those ballplayers in Divisions AAA thru Seniors. Player Agents will tabulate the votes and present the top twenty (20) players for review to the All-Star Selection Committee. The second step is for the All-Star Selection Committee meet and confirm the list as presented. The Committee then confirms the top three (3) vote getters as the first three players selected to the team. The Committee selects the next six (6) players, and the All-Star Manager (and approved by the President and Vice President) selects the remaining three (3) or more players to round out the team. All player selections are subject to approval by the entire All Star Selection Committee.

Participation in FHLL All-Stars is a significant commitment for the player and family. All-Star players must attend all official team activities, practices, scrimmages and games, unless there is a compelling reason for an absence (i.e. school event, medical appointment). The league asks that all-star players postpone other sport activities (i.e. basketball camp) until the completion of the all-star tournaments. Please be aware players may be removed from the team for lack of attendance at all-star team events.

Tournament play requires our teams to work very hard to maximize talents and be competitive. Consequently, the teams will practice almost daily and will be playing practice scrimmages in the weeks prior to the start of the District 9 All-Star tournaments. This is an immense commitment, and the players are required to make this team their priority. Players must commit to the team for as long as the team is victorious, potentially all the way through Regionals or their respective World Series tournament in August.

Parents and players should be aware that playing time on an all-star team will not be distributed evenly, nor is playing time in the field guaranteed. While players may have played multiple innings and positions in on their house league team, that is not a guarantee of playing time. In addition, involvement on a travel team is not a guarantee of playing time either. Players may be asked to play a different role on an all‐star team. This could involve playing a different position, playing fewer innings, and having fewer at‐bats. Playing time, batting order and fielding positions are determined by the all‐star manager, subject to the Little League International tournament rules governing mandatory minimum play. Games will be managed to maximize the chance of victory. It is important that you discuss these things with your player before you commit to playing for an all-star team.

If selected to a FHLL All-Star Team, families will be responsible for paying the All‐Star Registration fee of $175.00 to FHLL, which pays for a portion of the all-star uniform and costs associated with the team and the tournament. Families should also understand that other expenses, such as hotel and travel, may be incurred if the team advances out of district play. Families will be responsible for all travel and food expenses.

FHLL All-Star Team rosters will be announced on June 1, 2023, and mandatory team practices may begin as early as June 1, 2023. The dates and locations for the tournaments will be confirmed and announced shortly.
